       Did you know that the beginning chapter in The Tarishe Curse was originally written in 2012 as a short story? I wrote it for my friend, Cathie (Duvall) Hunt, who possesses a seriously spooky love for Halloween. I thought it would be fun to incorporate some Hallows Eve creatures into a haunting story as a treat for her. Fact: the first chapter of The Tarishe Curse is still that original short story in its completion. When Cathie asked me "What happens next?" I was stunned at first. No additional storyline existed in my mind; it wasn't meant to be a longer tale. But after some thought, I determined to write a new chapter every Halloween and post it online for readers to enjoy. Over the next few years posting annual chapters, the original eventually developed into something substantial. And now, eleven years later on this very Halloween 2022, The Tarishe Curse comes to an end in the form of a 300+ pages book available in paperback, hardcover, and e-book for kindle. 

Now... what about the cover? Glad you asked.

A little about the creation of this cover: Yes, I do my own artwork, and though I am certainly not a professional artist, I enjoy creating my book covers. As far as I'm concerned, writing books trumps cover art, but I do keep full control over the entire book this way. For The Tarishe Curse cover, I wanted specific details to be included. First and foremost, a full Tarishe moon. This red moon is a bewitching natural phenomenon in my fictional world mentioned early on in the book. Surrounding the village of Tarishe is a forest of thin aspen trees; this I also wanted on the cover, including an aura of dreary darkness. I think I nailed the ambiance.

For me, it didn't seem quite enough to have atmosphere only depicted on the cover, though it did an effective job of setting the mood for my book. But it felt... empty. What I wanted was to introduce the main character here with her ominous silver sword. I kept her features hidden on purpose, leaving her face as mysterious as her conflicting identity. Yes, you'll have to read the book to understand that reference. 

After adding her as a focus under the light of the Tarishe moon, I was pleased. So, without further delay... here is the final cover of The Tarishe Curse. Look for it on Amazon.com

10 Things You Want to Know About The Tarishe Curse

The Tarishe Curse, written by Richelle E. Goodrich, began as a short story back in 2012. Chapters were added each Halloween until it eventually became a novel-length book. To prepare you for meeting the Hallows Eve creatures in this thrilling tale, here are ten things you want to know about The Tarishe Curse:

1. This book started out as a short story for a friend of the author who absolutely loves Halloween. The first chapter was originally meant to be the entirety of The Tarishe Curse.

2. The character, Catherine, was named after the author's friend to whom the book is dedicated.

3. The character, Duvalla, is also named after the same friend. Duvall was her maiden name.

4. Circumstances in the story are never exactly what they seem. Remember that.

5. Catherine the Huntress wields a terrible silver sword that drives fear into the hearts of werewolves.

6. There are vampires involved in the story too. Begrudgingly involved.

7. A full Tarishe Moon comes but once a year, as red as blood in color.

8. No curse can persist while a full Tarishe moon glows in the night sky.

9. Yes, there is a haunted mansion.

10. One character will survive this Hallows Eve tale to become the main character in a future book by Richelle E. Goodrich, already in its planning stages. It is not who you think.

       It was seven years ago that I sat down to write a werewolf story for my friend, Cathie Duvall, who is without a doubt one of Halloween's biggest fans. I remember thinking it would be fun to surprise her with a short story suitable for the spooky holiday. I never thought she would ask me what happens next in the story. I had no plans for "what next," so I never expected that our friendly conversation would result in a Halloween tradition that is now in its seventh year! 

       Since that October of 2012, I have added yearly installments to what has become an ongoing tale about the Queen of Werefolk and her entanglement with evil witches, a lonely warlock, desperate vampires, merciless gargoyles, and oh yes, hideous trolls. Writing annual chapters to The Tarishe Curse has become my Hallows Eve tradition, one I'll admit is a real challenge for me. Typically, I plan out my stories from beginning to end before jotting the first sentence on paper. But this tale I created year by year without any idea where it leads. I still don't know for certain how to wrap up the crazy tale. With a wild twist, I hope!

Year Six of The Tarishe Curse

       It's getting close to that spooky time of year, All Hallows Eve.  You know what happens about this time, I add on another few pages to my ongoing Halloween tale starring the queen of werefolk.  If you haven't read the previous portions of this cursed story, now is the time to do so!

       Are you wondering how this tradition began?  I'll tell you.

Six years back, I decided to write a short story for a friend who could easily be crowned Queen of Halloween (she is that obsessed with the holiday.)  After reading the story, she asked me an unexpected question.

       "What happens next?" 

       Uh. . . well. . . nothing.  It was supposed to be a simple Halloween short story. 

       But she got me thinking.  What might happen next if I were to continue the tale?  That started an annual writing tradition that continues today.  Every Halloween, I add to an ongoing adventure that includes werewolves, a powerful and vengeful witch, devious vampires, treacherous gargoyles, and other frightful creatures of the night.  It is a spooky delight!

       So prepare yourselves!

The 5th Annual Posting of THE TARISHE CURSE for Halloween

It is hard to believe this is my 5th annual posting in my ongoing Hallows Eve story, The Tarishe Curse. For those new to my Hallows Eve tradition, allow me to fill you in...

A few years back I thought it would be fun to write a short Halloween story for my friend, Cathie, who happens to be the holiday's biggest fan. I posted the story on my blog—a grim tale about the cursed Queen of Werefolk—and then let Cathie know to read it.

So she did. And then she asked, "What's the rest of the story?"

"Whoa, wait… what? The rest of the story? You mean, you want to know what happens next? Well, I don't know; I meant for it to end there."

"Oh, I think you should consider extending the story for next Halloween."

The idea appealed to me, so I wrote more about the werewolves, their enemies, their challenges, and I posted it the following Halloween. On that day, a tradition was born.

The Tarishe Curse―A NEW Post on Halloween

     Halloween is just around the pumpkin patch! I have finished writing the next installment of my traditional tale for All Hallows Eve, an ongoing story about the cursed queen of werefolk, Duvalla. Only a few short days and it will be time to post the next portion of this dark adventure. You have just enough time to re-read the story from the beginning. Here's Your All Hallows Eve Treat

Having received more than one request for the newest chapters in The Tarishe Curse to be posted a day early because... 

"Halloween is too filled with festivities; there's no time to read."  

"I'm torn between wanting to curl up on the sofa and read vs getting into costume to go out with friends"  

"I hate trying to speed read so I can be done before trick-or-treating starts."

I've sucumbed to these valid arguments. So, this chilly autumn day preceding All Hallow's Eve, I give you the next installment of the Queen of Werefolk's harrowing story.

But first, for those new to our holiday tradition, allow me to fill you in...

A few years back I thought it would be fun to write a short Halloween story for my friend, Cathie, who happens to be the holiday's biggest fan. I posted my completed work on my blog—a grim tale about the cursed Queen of Werefolk—and let Cathie know to read it.

She did.

And then she asked, "So, what's the rest of the story?"

Uh….what? The rest? You mean, you want to know what happens next? Well, I don't know; I meant for it to end.

"You should extend the story for next Halloween."

Countdown to Halloween—Newly Posted Chapters of The Tarishe Curse!

“It isn’t always true that a critical end justifies desperate means.”

"The werewolves’ howling increased in unison, mixed with vicious yapping and the sound of splintering wood echoing from various points outside the gates. I continued screaming out in pain when Baron released my hand—bloody and mangled. He swiped my sword and stepped aside, once again dropping to a knee like a trained monkey.

'I will deal with you next,' the witch warned me in a hiss."

“My ears interpreted a mix of nearby voices as calm, friendly, ordinary chatter. With that as background noise, I enjoyed the silent attention of my mate. The way his hand brushed softly over every inch of my bare skin tempted my eyelids to close and my mind to wander, but I kept focused, not wanting to miss a moment of admiring this beautiful man and his seductive, wild look. I felt a flood of emotion set in, born from absolute, interminable love for him. I wished for the voices to cease, for time to halt, for the moment we were living to replay over and over and over again perpetually. The world could have its gain and glory, its vengeance and victories—all I wanted was the enduring love and attention of this man who most assuredly was my soulmate.”

“I drifted off after a while, staring at the only star visible through the thick covering of leaves. Hope seemed a futile wish, but I troubled the lonely star to grant it anyway.”

“Stop it!" I screamed, scrambling to my knees. “Stop your cruelty this instant! Leave them alone! Is vengeance all you know, you awful, haggard, old crone?”
My outburst proved successful at putting a halt to whatever evil had been in motion. The old woman turned her eyes full on me for the first time, looking genuinely shocked by my audacity. I continued to struggle with my bands, desperate to slip free.
“Such insolence, Catherine?”
“That is not my name, you barbarian!”

It's mid October.

The air has taken on an icy chill.  The trees have turned colors—from calm green to blazing red and ginger. Maple leaves rain down on me as I realize All Hallows Eve is merely days away.  I am excited because this means another installment in my ongoing Halloween Tale.

If you've not heard how the ritual of my annual spook tale got started, three years back I wrote a short story for a friend who could easily be crowned Queen of Halloween (she is that obsessed with the holiday.)  Her thrill over the story and a question as to what happens next started a writing tradition that continues today.  Every Halloween, I add to an ongoing adventure starring the queen of werefolk—including a powerful and vengeful witch, devious vampires, and other frightful creatures of the night.  It is a spooky delight!

The Tarishe Curse... Continued

Halloween Again.

Honestly, it's not my favorite holiday.  The gory masks and haunted houses meant to cause alarming nightmares and the unsettling eeriness that does nothing but disturb my peaceful spirit—these things have never gone over big with me.  But I will admit that I really do like the idea of dressing up to pretend for a day while hording a jack-o-lantern stuffed full of free candy from neighbors who will never ever realize that I live only two houses down from them. 

This year I’ve discovered something I seriously want to own—a GIANT spider that jumps out with raised front legs, nearly scaring the ghost out of anyone who crosses its path.  A great big smile for the person who invented that Halloween gizmo!  Never ceases to creep me out.  (I hate spiders.)

You might be wondering why exactly I write on ongoing Hallows Eve suspense horrorish-thriller if it’s not my….uh, cup of witch’s brew?  The answer is, because I happen to know the actual Queen of Halloween; she’s a friend who truly does possess a spooky love for the holiday.  It was her obsession with witches and warlocks conjuring up midnight spells under a full moon where werewolves howl in the distant background and vampire bats flit above monstrous gargoyles as they come to life on cemetery grounds housing dead pirates whose ghoulish spirits rise from their plots on this one night a year.  It was my curious fascination with her obsession that helped me think up The Tarishe Curse.  Then someone suggested that I expand on the original story.  Upon further consideration I accepted the challenge, and now it has become my trick-or-treat tradition to write a new chapter every year, posted on my author blog for anyone who wishes a little free Halloween reading treat.

And so, without further goblin gibberish meant to stall, I present for your Hallows Eve entertainment pleasure the next chapter in the life of Duvalla, Queen of Werefolk.  And once again I dedicate this story to Cathie Hunt, the lady obsessed with Halloween. 

(In case you’re wondering—yes, you can expect another chapter next year about this same time.  I’ve already begun….)   

Vengeance, retaliation, retribution, revenge are deceitful brothers;

vile, beguiling demons promising justifiable compensation

to a pained soul for his losses.

Prepare for Another Halloween Treat!

Last Halloween I had the itch to write a short story appropriate for the Hallows Eve season.  I posted it on my author blog as a holiday treat under the title, The Tarishe Curse, and proceeded to introduce the Queen of Werefolk and her mate, Duvalla and Kresh.  The tale of a wicked witch’s hatred for werewolves and Duvalla’s continual struggle with a curse that blinds her mind was meant as a simple lesson in the destructive energy that vengeance wields.  It was not an elaborate story.  Complete within a few pages.  I had no intention of ever returning to Duvalla and Kresh.  

But then I was asked a crazy question.

“Are you going to write another chapter about the werewolves for next Halloween?”

“Uh….”  The thought truly hadn’t crossed my mind.  “Do you think I should?”

The answer was an eager, "yes!" 

Hmmmm, what to write?

I spent my waking hours thinking and pondering and walking in daydreams with Duvalla over possible roads she might wander in an extended tale.  The more I delved into her world of fearsome Halloween creatures, the more excited I became of making this ongoing story a Hallows Eve tradition.  How long could I extend Duvalla’s tale?  Well, let's see.....how long do werewolves live? 

I’ve completed the next chapter of her story for this upcoming Halloween, which I’m itching like the worst case of chicken pox in medical history to share with all my readers.  But first, I would ask you to refresh your memory and reread the beginning of Duvalla and Kresh’s story, and if you haven't had the pleasure already, please read if for the first time.  Enjoy last year’s chapter of The Tarishe Curse and don’t bite your nails off…..the next will be posted in a few more days.  But beware!  There's no turning back once you start.
